#1338 Annette (2021)

Musicals usually have a hard time at the sneak - arguably even harder than horror films, even though the last "real" musical (as opposed to just music films like e.g. #1301 "Judy") - #1144 "La La Land" - got a top ten spot in that year. But generally, for every "La La Land", there are at least half a dozen #0115 "Preacher's Wife" or #0631 "Dreamgirls".
Curiously, "Annette" wasn't originally supposed to become a movie; rather, it was an idea for a concept album of the Californian band "Sparks" with which they planned to tour. However, when excentric french director Leos Carax "Les amants du pont-neuf" used one of their songs in his 2011 film "Holy Motors", they wondered whether the could turn their idea into a musical instead, and to their surprise, Carax was interested. The film got greenlighted way back in 2016 with Adam Driver as the male lead, but his commitements with "Star Wars" kept delaying the project which lead to an array of actresses (e.g. Rooney Mara and Michelle Williams) to be first cast for opera singer Ann, then having to drop out again due to scheduling conflicts. When shooting finally began in late 2019 Ann was portrayed by Marion Cotillard, with former "Big Bang Theory" star Simon Kinberg starring in the only other role of note.
The film itself tells a tragic love story between a "agent provocateur" comedian and a classical opera singer; the film conveys almost all of its story though the songs with very few spoken dialogue apart from the occasional "show biz news" broadcast.
Here's the trailer for "Annette", which does not at all convey the amount of music:
And how did you like this film, which I venture to claim is unlike any other of the 1338 sneak entries? How did you like the songs, the sets, the perfomance, and the at times puzzling aesthetic decisions? I'm very interested to read what you thought about this musical.
