"Jonathan" may be the feature-length directorial debut of Alabama-born Bill Oliver, but he's been "in the business" for a quarter of the century. Most of that time, however, he directed theatre plays, just making a short film every few years (which played a various festivals in- and outside the US). For "Jonathan", he teamed up with two co-writers with whom he previously had collaborated for two short films; the sci-fi tale premiered at the Tribeca Festival in April 2018 and was released in November that year in the US before quickly moving to Netflix there.

Zäh und viel zu lang... Wie man dem Eingangspost entnehmen kann, machte der Reghisseur zuvor nur Kurfilme und Theater, da hätte er mit dem Stoff mal lieber bei Kurzfilmen bleiben sollen, denn die Groúndidee fand ich klasse und auch der ein oder andere Twist funktionierte gut, nur dass es beim ersten Twist (wo man erfährt, wie das eigentlich funktioniert mit dem "geteilten Körper") etwas zu lange dauerte und als das bekannt war, passiert eine gefühlte Ewigkeit so gut wie nichts und wenn, dann viel zu klein Häppchen, was besonders am Ende, zum zweiten Twist sehr nervig auffiel, der Kontrast zu der zähen Exposition und dem ausgewalzten Füllmaterial war da einfach zu gross... Aber schauspielerisch war das sehr gut gelöst, wir älteren Osterhasen mussten natürlich über die naiv gefakten VHS Videos schmunzeln (Stichwort Spulen^^). Mir haben auch die Blackouts am Ende gefallen - auch wenn sie, wie gesagt, nicht so ganz passten. Somit denke ich ist eine 3 eine faire Note.
