"Berlin Syndrome" is the third feature film by Australian director Cate Shortland, who mainly worked in television (making a few short films on the side) before writing and directing 2004's coming-of-age drama "Somersault", which was shown at the Cannes film festival and won all 13 feature film categories at the Australian Film Institute Awards. Her second feature "Lore" was a mostly German-language adaptation of a novel set in post-WW2 Germany which was on the Oscar shortlist for foreign-language film. For "Berlin Syndrome" she returns to Germany while adapting the debut novel by fellow Australian Melane Joosten.
