"Mahana" isn't Lee Tamahori's first saga about the Maori people he directed - in fact, his cinematic debut was the 1994 release "Once were Warriors", a story about the daily struggles of the Maori in contemporary New Zealand. Since then, he has worked mostly in and for Hollywood, directing films as diverse as "Mullholland Falls", "Along Came a Spider", "Die Another Day", and "xXx 2: State of the Union". With "Mahana", he returns to his homeland and once again adapts a novel ("Bulibasha: King Of The Gypsies"), this time by Witi Ihimeara, who also wrote "Wahle Rider". He also reteams with one of the leads from "Once Were Warriors", Temuera Morrison, who plays the head of the Mahana clan.
