#1386 The Woman King

Beitrag von Kasi Mir »

"The Woman King", a period drama of about a 19th Century army consisting only of women, was directed by Gina Prince-Blythewood, who after his well-received debut "Love & Basketball" in 2000 only has directed three films in between before tackling this one, most recently mythical actioner "The Old Guard" for Netflix. The screenplay is credited to Dana Stevens, whose previous sneak entries, #0433 "Life or Something Like It" and #0946 "Safe Haven" weren't exactly stunning; story credit is given to actress Maria Bello in what amounts to her first writing credit ever.

The trailer looks like this:

But the main question is: how did you like the film, that plays fast and loose with the documented history of Dahomey, as History vs Hollywood points out? How did you like the performances, most notably by Viola Davis as the leader of the Agojie, plus Lashana Lynch as her lieutenant Izogie, and South African actress Thuso Mbedu as new recruit Nawi? Oh, and what about John Boyega as King Ghezo, pretty much the only role that had a real-life counterpart? How did you like the battles, the intrigues, and the banter? Let uns know in a reply to this posting.
"Sometimes, you can still catch me dancing in it."

Ich mache es anders als der Film, denn der war etwas zu lang, daher nur eine 3.
