#1213 You Were Never Really Here

Beitrag von Kasi Mir »

No, "You Were Never Really Here" is not the long-awaited (well ...) sequel to Joaquin Phoenix' 2010 mockumentary "I'm Still Here" (Sneak #0861), nor is has it anything to do with the high-concept Dylan deconstruction "I'm Not There." from 2007. Rather, it's scottish director Lynne Ramsays long-awaited follow-up to her critically acclaimed "We Need to Talk About Kevin", the trailer of which was shown in tonight's program. It wasn't supposed to be her followup feature, though - that was supposed to be western "Jane Got a Gun" starring Natalie Portman. That movie had numerous delays and a number of actors (Michael Fassbender, Jude Law, Bradley Cooper) dropping out for various reasons, and as the filming was finally getting ready to start, a dispute between the producers and director-to-be Ramsay prompted her to quit as well. (The movie was made with a different director, then was shelved for almost three years before being released without much fanfare.)

For this feature, she once again wrote the screenplay herself by adapting the 2016 novel of the same name by author and TV producer Jonathan Ames. The book is just 96 pages long - so it doesn't come as that much of a surprise that the proceedings of the movie give way to the closing credits after only 81 minutes. So here's roughly 2.5% of the movie:

What did you think of "You Were Never Really Here" which despite a few known faces here and there rests firmly on Joaquin Phoenix' perfomance as damaged enforcer Joe? How did you like the visuals and the soundtrack? What did you think of the story about the abduction of a teenager that turns into a far bigger mess? Please write your thoughts about the film into a reply to this post. But don't look to closely at Mr. Phoenix - that can be very dangerous. 8-)
