#1190 Battle of the Sexes

Beitrag von Kasi Mir »

Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton have been working as directors for more than three decades now, yet "Battle of the Sexes" is only their third feature film (after "Little Miss Sunshine", and sneak movie #0934, "Ruby Sparks"). The pair started out - as many in the 1980s - making music videos, for everyone from Janet Jackson, to R.E.M., Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Weezer. They also did the occasional documentary, and founded a production company for commercials almost two decades ago which worked with everyone from Apple to Ikea.

For "Battle of the Sexes", they worked from a script by british screenwriter Simon Beaufoy ("The Full Monty", "Slumdog Millionaire"), who in turn had the real-life story of Billy Jean King and her epic match against former Wimbledon champion Bobby Riggs as source material. Our friends at "History vs. Hollywood" have a whole featurette on the subject; the short version is that the film stayed surprisingly close to the events as they happened - the most noteworthy difference being the fact that Marilyn Barnett was not a hairdresser, but rather a secretary.

Without further ago, the trailer to "Battle of the Sexes":

And how did you like this latest sneak biopic, which was mainly carried by the performances of Emma Stone and Steve Carell, and the supporting cast including Bill Pullman, Sarah Silverman, Andrea Riseborough, and Alan Cumming? Please write down your thoughts about the film as a reply to this post, instead of bothering someone by calling them at odd hours in the night.
